A success story for the members of the BIOMEDUZ Scientific Circle. An initiative group consisting of students from Biomedical Engineering and Physiotherapy programs has secured funding through an EU competition to implement their original project titled “FizjoKids – Small Steps, Big Progress.”
The aim of the student project is to address increasingly common problems among children, such as postural defects, limited physical activity, balance disorders, and coordination issues. The students emphasize that these seemingly “small” problems can lead to serious health consequences in adulthood—such as degenerative changes or spinal deformities.
Conversations with parents of preschoolers reveal that there is still a prevailing belief that posture correction can wait and begin only in school years. The FizjoKids project aims to change this mindset and raise awareness about posture defect prevention from the earliest years of life. The group’s activities combine theory with practice and make use of modern technologies, such as force platforms for precise analysis of biomechanical parameters. The project is based on an interdisciplinary approach—drawing on knowledge from biomechanics, anatomy, and physiotherapy.
“A child’s body is a biomechanical system. Changes in the feet can affect deformities in the knees, hips, and later the spine. That’s why preventive measures cannot be postponed,” the team members stress.
On behalf of the supporting organization—the University of Zielona Góra—the agreement was signed by Prof. Justyna Patalas-Maliszewska, Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation. The group’s mentors are Dr. Agnieszka Mackiewicz and Monika Politańska. Thanks to the secured funding of EUR 9,204.00, the team will be able to put their project into practice. This is not only a valuable scientific and educational experience but also a real response to the needs of the local community.
