For more than six decades, Zielona Góra has been building its reputation as a centre of science, education and innovation. Over the years, the city’s academic community has contributed significantly to research, technological development and the education of highly qualified professionals.
To celebrate this remarkable milestone, the University of Zielona Góra hosted a jubilee conference at the Rectorate on 1 June. The event provided an opportunity not only to reflect on the achievements of the past but also to discuss ambitious plans for the future.
According to archival records, since 1960 higher education institutions in Zielona Góra have educated more than 123,000 graduates—almost as many as the city’s current population. Another important anniversary is approaching: in 2026, the University of Zielona Góra will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its establishment.
The significance of these anniversaries was highlighted during a press briefing preceding the conference. “This celebration would not have been possible without more than forty years of academic traditions that preceded the establishment of the University of Zielona Góra. The Higher School of Engineering, the Zielona Góra University of Technology and the Pedagogical University all played a crucial role in shaping the institution we know today. June marks the culmination of celebrations of both the University’s 25th anniversary and the 60th anniversary of the academic community in Zielona Góra. It is difficult to imagine the city and the region without the University and its contribution to social and economic development,” said Prof. Wojciech Strzyżewski, Rector of the University of Zielona Góra.
While often described as a regional university, the University of Zielona Góra has steadily strengthened its position both nationally and internationally.
“The University has become one of the most recognisable institutions in the Lubusz Region and an important contributor to its development. It supports the growth of academic talent and educates professionals who go on to work in industry, public administration and many other sectors. We are proud to support these efforts and wish the University continued success in the years ahead,” said Prof. Maria Mrówczyńska, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
Representatives of regional authorities emphasised the University’s role in shaping the region’s future. “Sixty years ago, the foundations were laid for generations of professionals who today contribute to many areas of public and economic life. The University of Zielona Góra is one of the strongest brands of the Lubusz Voivodeship. Its ambitions continue to grow, and we are confident that its future plans will be successfully realised,” said Maciej Siwicki, Vice-Governor of the Lubusz Voivodeship.
The University’s impact on regional economic development was also underlined during the event. “In today’s knowledge-based economy, innovation and technological advancement depend on strong academic institutions. Our cooperation with the University of Zielona Góra dates back to the establishment of the Lubusz Voivodeship in 1999. One of our most important joint achievements has been the development of the Medical Doctor Programme. The regional government has invested more than PLN 20 million in educating future physicians, and we look forward to many more years of fruitful cooperation,” said Sebastian Ciemnoczołowski, Marshal of the Lubusz Voivodeship.
The city authorities likewise expressed their appreciation for the University’s achievements and growing reputation. “The University of Zielona Góra continues to thrive despite intense competition in the higher education sector. Its success contributes directly to the scientific, educational and economic development of our city. As a graduate of the University myself, I am particularly proud of its achievements. Together with our partners, we are also working on major projects such as the planned Lubusz Oncology Centre,” said Marcin Pabierowski, Mayor of Zielona Góra.
The official conference programme featured presentations by distinguished members of the academic community. Prof. Michał Kisielewicz, former Rector of the University, reflected on the development of higher education in Zielona Góra. Prof. Dariusz Dolański spoke about the University as a community, focusing on identity, transformation and future challenges. Strategic perspectives for the University’s development were presented by Prof. Justyna Patalas-Maliszewska, Vice-Rector for Research and International Cooperation.
The jubilee conference was also an occasion to honour individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the University and Polish science. During the ceremony, four former Rectors of the University of Zielona Góra received the Sapientia et Veritas Medal for Meritorious Service to Polish Science, awarded by the Minister of Science and Higher Education.
In addition, the University of Zielona Góra and Rector Prof. Wojciech Strzyżewski were awarded the Medal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland in recognition of their distinguished contributions to academic development and scientific advancement.
As the University approaches its 25th anniversary and celebrates more than sixty years of academic tradition in the region, it remains firmly committed to its mission of advancing knowledge, fostering innovation and contributing to the development of society at both regional and international levels.
