We are pleased to inform you that Prof. Dr. hab. Leszek Jerzak from the Institute of Biological Sciences at the University of Zielona Góra has been appointed to the Coordinating Committee of the European Geoparks Network (EGN). The first meeting of this body took place on March 5–6 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The event was attended by representatives of 109 geoparks from 28 European countries, as well as UNESCO officials, including a representative of our university who also serves as Poland’s delegate to the Polish-German UNESCO Global Geopark “Łuk Mużakowa-Muskauer Faltenbogen” (EUWT).
The meeting was held in connection with the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme. Over this period, 213 UNESCO Global Geoparks have been established in 48 countries worldwide. During the conference, we also participated in workshops and thematic panels. The event concluded with a tasting of regional products, where Polish bread with lard and pickled cucumbers was particularly well received.
The conference focused on the role of geoparks in education, tourism, and regional development. It was emphasized that the activities carried out within the framework of geoparks contribute to the sustainable development of rural areas - said Prof. Dr. hab. Leszek Jerzak, Director of the Institute of Biological Sciences at the University of Zielona Góra.
