It was an exceptional ceremony. On Wednesday, April 22, over sixty employees of the University of Zielona Góra (UZ) received state and departmental decorations. In addition, the UZ Rector’s Awards were officially presented. In total, over 170 academic and administrative staff members were recognized for their achievements throughout 2025.

The state and departmental honors were presented by the Vice-Voivode of the Lubusz Voivodeship.

"This is, above all, an expression of recognition and respect for your daily work, which benefits not only the university but the entire Lubusz region. UZ possesses an experienced staff that has been nurturing Zielona Góra's fine academic traditions for decades. Through their scientific and educational work, these individuals elevate the prestige of both Zielona Góra and the entire region," emphasized Maciej Siwicki.

The Gold Medal for Long Service was awarded to fourteen UZ employees, while seventeen received the Silver Medal for Long Service, and four were honored with the Bronze Medal for Long Service.

"Such decorations are given to people who have done something meaningful. This medal shows that my work has been noticed and appreciated, which is the most important thing. As a full professor, I have reached the pinnacle of my academic career. I established three new programs at the former Faculty of Humanities that still exist today, and I have mentored over a dozen of our graduates who went on to earn their PhDs. Our Institute of Philosophy is well-recognized; we are definitely a prominent fixture on the academic map," said Prof. Lilianna Kiejzik from the UZ Institute of Philosophy, a recipient of the Gold Medal for Long Service.

"Every award is always a pleasant milestone for an employee. For me, the Silver Medal for Long Service is primarily a recognition of years of hard work and commitment to the university. I view this honor as a great privilege, but also as motivation to continue working, sharing knowledge, and supporting future generations of students," added Paweł Szudra, PhD, from the UZ Institute of Management and Quality Sciences, who received the Silver Medal.

By decision of the Minister of Education and Science, the Medal of the Commission of National Education was also awarded to twenty-eight UZ employees.

"This is my first medal, even though I have been in the profession for thirty years. It is certainly prestigious and brings deep appreciation for my work. For me, working with students is what matters most, and I believe this medal reflects that commitment. In my daily work, I focus primarily on providing support to those grieving the loss of loved ones. I run workshops to help them navigate this difficult time. I also specialize in social pedagogy and social work," noted Anna Korlak-Łukasiewicz, PhD, from the UZ Institute of Pedagogy.

Another highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Rector’s Awards for the past academic year.

"A vast number of our staff members achieved outstanding scientific results that richly deserved recognition, which explains why we have such a large group of laureates today. Receiving the Rector’s Award is a key milestone in an academic career—it is a significant credential on a CV and plays a vital role in academic promotions. As for the state and departmental honors, they reaffirm the high standing and prestige of our academic institution within the broader community. Today, it is hard to imagine local institutions or industries thriving without our active involvement," explained Prof. Wojciech Strzyżewski, PhD, DSc, Rector of the University of Zielona Góra.

The Rector's Awards were granted across fifteen distinct categories, covering promotions to professor, DSc (doktor habilitowany), and PhD (doktor), as well as individual and team achievements in research, art, and teaching excellence.

"Receiving the 1st Class Rector’s Teaching Award is an immense honor and a validation of the educational initiatives I have undertaken. I view this award not only as a recognition of my past work but also as an inspiration for further growth, looking for new teaching solutions, and fostering even greater engagement with our students," commented Assoc. Prof. Anita Famuła-Jurczak, from the UZ Institute of Pedagogy.

The Wednesday ceremony was hosted by Prof. Justyna Patalas-Maliszewska, PhD, DSc, Eng., Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation, who also expressed her high regard for the honorees:

"The recipients have put a tremendous amount of effort into their teaching activities. Today, we presented awards for achieving the title of professor, as well as DSc and PhD degrees—these are the career advancements we all strive for. I offer my special congratulations and warmest regards to those who have elevated the scientific quality of the University of Zielona Góra.
