The Polish Mathematical Society in Zielona Góra Turns 50

This year, the Zielona Góra Branch of the Polish Mathematical Society, an organization bringing together enthusiasts of the “queen of sciences,” is celebrating its half-century of activity. The anniversary ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 22, at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Zielona Góra. The gathering offered an opportunity to share memories and summarize the group’s achievements so far.

And there is certainly much to be proud of. The Zielona Góra Branch of the Polish Mathematical Society has organized many conferences and produced numerous scientific publications. “Our branch was founded in 1975. Since then, mathematics has developed greatly in Zielona Góra. Our community has grown in knowledge and expertise. The Institute of Mathematics at UZ strongly supports mathematicians and the entire Polish Mathematical Society. Together, we promote mathematics among young people, among other things. Recently, we have also seen increasing interest in studying this field at the University of Zielona Góra,” explains Dr. hab. Bogdan Szal, Professor UZ and Director of the Institute of Mathematics.

During Wednesday’s event, participants also discussed the future of mathematical research in the region and the upcoming activities of the local PTM branch. “We have many ideas, mostly focused on popularizing mathematics. If we present mathematics well to young people, they will later engage with it—if not directly, then through applications. After all, all engineering is based on mathematics. There is hardly any field of science that isn’t connected to it,” says Prof. Dr. hab. Andrzej Cegielski from the Institute of Mathematics at UZ.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, the Mayor’s Awards were also presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the Polish Mathematical Society and the development of the mathematical community in Zielona Góra. Honored by the city authorities were Prof. Michał Kisielewicz (Diamond Medal), Prof. Mieczysław Borowiecki (Gold Medal), and Prof. Andrzej Cegielski (Silver Medal).
