An agreement to implement the project entitled “Establishment of the Biodiversity Conservation Centre” at the Botanical Garden of the University of Zielona Góra has been signed. The University is a partner of the City of Zielona Góra in this initiative. The total project value amounts to PLN 2.74 million, including PLN 2.24 million in funding from the European Union.
As the name suggests, the main objective of the project is to establish a Biodiversity Conservation Centre within the Botanical Garden in Zielona Góra. The Centre will cover an area of 6.9788 hectares adjacent to the existing Botanical Garden of the University of Zielona Góra. The project primarily aims to protect natural habitats of native species. Its objectives include improving the condition of existing native species populations, enhancing the biodiversity of the area and expanding opportunities for scientific research. The initiative will also broaden the scope of environmental education to include native species characteristic of the ecosystems of the Lubusz region.
The development of the site will involve, among other measures, removing invasive non-native plant species, enhancing biodiversity and restoring selected natural habitats. These objectives will be achieved by planting new vegetation to establish appropriate layers of trees, undergrowth and ground flora. The project also includes measures to protect newly planted vegetation from animals and the installation of essential technical infrastructure, including mineral-surfaced paths, benches and lighting at selected locations.
The project entitled “Establishment of the Biodiversity Conservation Centre at the Botanical Garden in Zielona Góra” is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under the European Funds for Lubuskie 2021–2027 Programme.
