The 13th Lubusz Neurology Conference has concluded. During the event, the focus was placed on topics such as lipid-lowering and anticoagulant treatment after a stroke, the acute phase of ischemic stroke, and cell therapies in neurology. Specialists from the University of Zielona Góra also shared their perspectives on the main themes of the conference, joining the ranks of the event’s experts.
The Saturday meeting was also an opportunity to showcase the daily work of the staff of the Department of Neurology at the Institute of Medical Sciences of the University of Zielona Góra. “We focus, among other things, on the connections between sleep disorders and strokes. We also pay attention to the impact of lighting. These are lesser-known aspects of stroke. We also study how naps and periodontal diseases affect the brain. We explore rather unusual and interesting topics, proposing a new approach. We identify less known but very significant factors,” said Prof. Radosław Kaźmierski, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Neurology at UZ.
As the experts emphasized, neurological disorders are the second most common cause of death and the leading cause of disability. “The social costs of these diseases are very high. Therefore, prevention and medication programs are crucial. We currently have many treatment tools; this is a rapidly developing field of medicine,” explained Dr. Szymon Jurga, MD, PhD, from the Department of Neurology at UZ.
Among the participants of the 13th Lubusz Neurology Conference were also students from the University of Zielona Góra. “This has a double significance. I am very pleased that students actively participate in such initiatives. Most importantly, however, this represents another stage in building the medical research community in our region. Our neurologists are the organizers. It is evident that progress is being made in terms of scientific work. Consequently, I hope that new academic degrees and titles will emerge soon,” added Prof. Wojciech Strzyżewski, Rector of the University of Zielona Góra.
It is also worth noting that significant attention during the meeting was given to topics such as thrombectomy, focal epilepsy, the use of entacapone in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, migraine prevention, and the current paradigm of multiple sclerosis therapy with highly effective drugs.
