Water Engineering and Land Reclamation as the Theme of a Conference at the University of Zielona Góra

A specialist conference entitled “Water Engineering and Land Reclamation” was held in Zielona Góra on 21 November 2025. The event took place at the Institute of Civil Engineering of the University of Zielona Góra. The aim of the conference was to create a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience in key areas of water engineering and land reclamation, with particular emphasis on durability, structural safety, and the impact of climate change on water management. The event brought together distinguished experts, researchers, and practitioners to jointly discuss current engineering and technological challenges in this important field.

The conference was officially opened by the Chair of the Programme Council, Dr hab. Eng. Beata Nowogońska, Prof. UZ, and the Chair of the Organising Committee, Dr Eng. Artur Juszczyk.

Among the invited guests who delivered opening remarks were also:

  • Deputy Mayor of the City of Zielona Góra, Dr Jarosław Flakowski, who emphasised the importance of water-related investments for regional development.
  • Chancellor of the University of Zielona Góra, Dr Katarzyna Łasińska.
  • Director of BCU No. 2 in Zielona Góra, Małgorzata Ragiel, MSc, who pointed out the need for educating specialised professional staff.

The central part of the conference was the Keynote Lecture delivered by Prof. Dr hab. Eng. Adam Wysokowski, who presented a detailed discussion on “Issues of Durability and Safety of Water Engineering and Land Reclamation Infrastructure Facilities.”

This was followed by a Session of Thematic Papers, during which the latest research results and analyses were presented:

  • Dr hab. Eng. Waldemar Szajna, Prof. UZ, presented “Engineering Problems Caused by Water Flow in Earth Structures,” addressing issues of stability and erosion.
  • Wojciech Poręba, MSc Eng., introduced the innovative “Underwater Concreting Technology ‘Incomat’,” which is used in challenging environmental conditions.
  • Dr Eng. Artur Juszczyk addressed the highly topical issue of “The Impact of Climate Change on Drainage and Retention,” highlighting the need to adapt land reclamation systems.

The meeting concluded with lunch and informal discussions, providing an excellent opportunity for networking, exchanging views, and establishing cooperation among participants.

The event confirmed the role of the Institute of Civil Engineering at the University of Zielona Góra as a centre integrating the academic community and practitioners in a field crucial to infrastructure development and water safety.
