Assoc. Prof. Katarzyna Kwiecień-Długosz, PhD

Dean of the Faculty of Arts

Composer and translator, graduate of the Mieczysław Karłowicz State School of Music in Zielona Góra, where she began composing under prof. Juliusz Karcz. She studied at the Ignacy Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań (in the composition class of prof. Mirosław Bukowski, obtaining a diploma with distinction), at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (MA studies in applied linguistics, postgraduate studies at the School of Translators and Foreign Languages, specialization: conference interpreting), as well as at the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź (postgraduate studies in film music, computer music and audiovisual works). She also completed postgraduate studies in art therapy at the K. Marcinkowski Medical University in Poznań. In 2012, she completed a doctoral dissertation at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, and in 2019, by decision of the Senate of the Ignacy Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, she obtained a postdoctoral degree in the field of art in the discipline of musical arts.

Laureate of composition competitions in Poland and abroad, including Reinl Preis 2003 in Vienna (Austria), Suoni di fiaba in Vittorio Veneto (Italy), Alfredo Casella in Siena (Italy). Her works have been performed many times throughout Poland and abroad (Sweden, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, Vietnam, Luxembourg, Belgium, Spain, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Norway, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Argentina and the USA). She has composed, among others, for the Mozart 2003 Association from Warsaw, choirs of the Szczecin University of Technology, Zielona Góra Philharmonic, Sepia Ensemble, Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra "Amadeus", Poznań Philharmonic, Gorzów Philharmonic, Gdańsk Museum and on request of organizers of music festivals in Germany, the Netherlands and Lithuania. Her compositions have been presented as part of the 9th International Polish-German Piano Competition in Görlitz (Germany), the International Festival of Contemporary Music Poznań Musical Spring, the Warsaw Musical Encounters Festival, the Sakralnyj Prostir Festival in Lviv (Ukraine), the Osmose Festival in Luxembourg and Brussels (Luxembourg, Belgium), the Turbulences Sonores Festival of Contemporary Music in Montpellier (France), the International Conference 'Generative Art' in Rome (Italy), the World Carillon Congress in Barcelona (Spain) and in the USA, the International Clarinet Festival Gran Canaria in Las Palmas (Spain), the International Cello Festival in Zutphen (Netherlands), the International Festival of Contemporary Music Klangbrücken 2023 Musik 21 Niedersachsen in Hannover (Germany), the Wojciech Kilar Contemporary Music Academy in Gorzów Wielkopolski, International Clarinet Forum in Dublin (Ireland) and international carillon festivals in France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Lithuania and the USA. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's birth, she took part in the international composition project "250 piano pieces for Beethoven" at the invitation of pianist Susanne Kessel (Bonn, Germany). She was also a finalist in the international composition project "Sinestesia fra le arti" (Busseto, Italy).

She has led masterclasses in composition in Poland (S. Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk), in Lithuania (Klaipėda Philharmonic) and in Germany (as part of the project "Jugend komponiert"). She was a member of the jury of national and international composition competitions. She also gave lectures on Polish culture and music at the invitation of universities in Vietnam (Universities in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Thanh Hoa).

Recordings of her compositions have been published on the albums: "Juliusz Karcz, Katarzyna Kwiecień-Długosz, Piano and Chamber Works" (Acte Prealable, 2017), "Tubicinatores Gedanenses, Turmmusik" (Ars Sonora, 2019), "Reed Connection Trio. Zielona Góra Musica Nova” (DUX, 2023), “Pieśni Norwida” (RecArt, 2024). Publications of her compositions have been published by Wydawnictwo Ars Musica sp. z o.o. (Lisowice) and Editions Musica Ferrum (London, England).

She was a scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and Art (1998), Deutscher Musikrat (2003) and the state of Brandenburg (2005-2006). She is a member of the Polish Composers' Union, the Polish Society of Contemporary Music and the Polish Society for Musical Analysis.

She is also a translator of German. Her translations of texts on music and musicology have been published, among others. in the music magazines "Glissando" and "Res Facta Nova", in the monographs "New German Music" and "New American Music" (published by Korporacja Ha!art), in the publications of the Publishing House of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław and the Polish Music Publishing House. She is also a co-author of the Great German-Polish Dictionary (PWN 2010).

Since 2005, she has been associated with the Institute of Music at the University of Zielona Góra, where she currently works as a professor. She serves as the head of the Department of Composition and Music Theory, and in recent years she has also served as vice-dean of the Faculty of Arts for student affairs and deputy director of the Institute of Music. As part of her cooperation with the Department of Composition at the I.J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, she organizes annual concerts of contemporary chamber music in Zielona Góra. For her artistic and organizational activities, she has received the Rector's Award of the University of Zielona Góra several times (in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023).
